What Athletes Know About Recovery (And What They Might Be Missing)

Elite athletes are data-driven about recovery in ways that would have seemed excessive a generation ago. They track heart rate variability every morning, schedule float tank sessions and cold plunges between hard training blocks, experiment with breathwork protocols, and monitor sleep architecture the way a mechanic monitors engine performance. The goal is consistent: create conditions where the nervous system can shift out of high-alert mode as quickly as possible after intense effort, so the body can do the repair work that performance demands.

The science behind this is worth understanding. Both the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems are always online — they’re not opponents taking turns, but two very different systems serving very different purposes. The sympathetic nervous system responds to alarm, demand, and effort. It drives the fight-or-flight response and tips the body toward catabolism: breaking down stored resources to fuel muscles and brain, while temporarily suspending non-essential processes like digestion and tissue repair. That’s exactly what hard training requires.

The parasympathetic system is different in character. It doesn’t respond to commands — you can’t will yourself into “rest and digest” any more than you can will your heart to slow down after a sprint. It becomes available when the conditions are right: an absence of perceived threat, a settling of tension, a quality of safety that the nervous system recognizes rather than decides. When that happens, the body shifts toward anabolism — nutrient absorption, glycogen synthesis, cellular repair, immune activation. This is where recovery actually lives.

The problem for many athletes isn’t effort. It’s that the nervous system doesn’t fully complete the shift back. When fight-or-flight persists beyond the training session — elevated cortisol, suppressed sleep depth, HRV that stays low — recovery stalls. The body remains ready to react rather than restore. Athletes pursuing that shift are turning to vagus nerve stimulation devices, sensory deprivation float tanks, targeted breathwork, and acupuncture. All of these work, in varying degrees, by creating conditions in which the nervous system registers that it’s safe to settle.

Here’s what’s less commonly discussed: a Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy session does precisely this — and it does so in a way that’s both subtle and surprisingly deep.

BCST works directly with the central nervous system and the fluid body that surrounds it. The touch is gentle enough that it doesn’t trigger a defensive response, which is exactly the point. Rather than forcing a physiological shift, the work creates conditions in which the nervous system recognizes it’s safe to downregulate. Sessions typically move through identifiable phases — an initial settling, a deepening stillness, and often a quality of rest that clients describe as unlike ordinary sleep. From a parasympathetic standpoint, this isn’t incidental to the work. It is the mechanism.

For an athlete, or anyone with an active physical life, the implications are worth considering. Better vagal tone means faster recovery between efforts. Lower baseline cortisol means more restorative sleep. A nervous system that can complete the cycle from effort to restoration — rather than staying braced — is one that can sustain a training load without tipping into overtraining. These aren’t side benefits of a craniosacral session. They’re what’s happening physiologically when the work goes deep.

I notice this in my own training — whether I’m swimming or rucking, two practices that ask different things of the body. On mornings after sessions where I’ve gone into genuine stillness, my body feels different — more fluid, less braced, easier to inhabit. That’s subjective, and I don’t overthink it. But it’s consistent enough that I pay attention to it.

The athletes seeking recovery are asking exactly the right question. They just may not have considered that the answer might involve something normally thought of as therapeutic — as precise and as quiet as a pair of hands, and a nervous system given permission to rest.
